From August 24, 2026, New Zealand is restructuring its Skilled Migrant Category program. Instead of a single points-based pathway, there will now be three options: the traditional points pathway, a skilled work experience pathway, and a trades & technician pathway. Anyone planning to apply for permanent residency in New Zealand needs to understand how this change affects their application.

What Is Changing

New Zealand has announced a major reform to its Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa program, introducing two new relocation pathways effective August 2026. From August 24, 2026, the SMC program will offer three ways to qualify.

The three pathways are:

  • Points-based pathway — the traditional approach, which continues to exist
  • Skilled Work Experience Pathway
  • Trades & Technician Pathway

You only need to meet the requirements of one pathway; you don't need to qualify through all three.

Key Changes in Detail

The main changes include revised work experience requirements, removal of the salary progression requirement, and enhanced pathways for skilled tradespersons.

The new framework expands eligibility by recognizing both professional and trades workers as skilled workers, while lowering barriers related to salary growth and lengthy work experience requirements.

This means:

  • Tradespersons (electricians, mechanics, etc.) now have their own dedicated pathway and don't need to compete on points with degree-holders
  • Work experience requirements can be more flexible
  • You no longer need to prove salary progression over time

Important Considerations

These changes affect how applications (Expression of Interest) are selected, but they don't change the visa qualification requirements themselves. INZ expects demand to continue exceeding available positions, so some applicants may still face lengthy waiting periods before being selected.

In other words: three pathways doesn't mean it's easier. It simply means you have more options. If you don't qualify under the traditional points pathway, you may be able to apply through the skilled work experience or trades pathway. However, if you don't meet the requirements of all three pathways, your application will still be declined.

One additional note: New Zealand has also announced changes to the Parent Resident Visa program from October 5, 2026, introducing a new mixed-selection model. If you have parents in New Zealand, monitor these changes.

Who Should Apply Now

If you're preparing an SMC application, check which pathway you qualify for. If the traditional points pathway doesn't work for you, the two new pathways may present an opportunity. However, calculate carefully before submitting, as a rejected application will cost you time and money.
