The Price of Argentine Citizenship
Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced the "golden passport" program at an investor event in Paris on October 2, 2026. Investors have two options: a non-refundable $350,000 contribution to the Argentine Treasury or an $800,000 investment in newly issued government bonds that must be held for 7 years.
Contribution amounts increase based on family size, with a family of four expected to pay $500,000. Spouses and children of the applicant may also obtain citizenship, with contributions of $100,000 for adults or $25,000 for children under 18.
What Is an Argentine Passport Worth?
Argentine citizenship grants visa-free access to 169 destinations worldwide. This is the program's main advantage — you will obtain a strong passport for international travel and business.
However, note this: the program requires no physical residency. You can purchase citizenship without living in Argentina, learning Spanish, or demonstrating any connection to the country.
Why Is Argentina Selling Citizenship?
Argentina faces nearly $25 billion in foreign debt due in 2027, and President Milei has avoided returning to international bond markets. This program is a way to generate foreign currency.
A group of investment advisory firms consulting with the government estimates the program could raise up to $2.5 billion for Argentina if it receives the expected number of applications.
Important Considerations
The program has not yet launched. As of October 2, 2026, the program remains closed with no application portal. The Ministry of Economy targets Q4 2026 to begin accepting applications, but the launch depends on implementing regulations and a pending Supreme Court challenge.
Strict due diligence. Applicants will undergo review by intelligence, financial, and security agencies before approval. Screening includes identity verification, source of funds, criminal background, and immigration history. Funds must transfer through the formal financial system.
Bond terms unclear. The announcement does not disclose bond terms (maturity, interest rate, whether principal is refundable), making the true cost of this route impossible to compare with the contribution route.
Political risk. A June court ruling created ambiguity over who will sign off on passport approvals. This means the program could face legal complications.
Who Should Consider It?
This program suits:
- Those seeking a strong passport for international travel and business without residency requirements
- Investors able to demonstrate a clear legal source of funds
- Those who do not need permanent residency or long-term visa options
Not suitable if:
- You need to live in Argentina immediately — this program does not grant residency rights
- You want to invest in real estate or a business — this is only a citizenship purchase program
- You cannot clearly document your source of funds
