These two facts side by side reveal what passport points measure and what they don't. This article reads the data of six Gulf countries according to QuocTich.com, updated 09/2026, and recounts how UAE rose from the middle of the ranking to the top over the course of about ten years.

One note upfront: Our database stores current status, not historical point sequences. The "ten years" section below is based on major policy announcements, not on old point figures we reconstructed ourselves.

Data Table: Six Gulf Passports in 2026

"Points" are the number of destinations accessible without applying for a visa in advance: visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and ETA. E-visas do not count — see our methodology at how we count visa-free access.

The "Visa Required" column says the most. UAE needs traditional visa applications for only 14 destinations. Its Gulf neighbors in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), with comparable per-capita income, must apply for visas at 68–86 destinations.

Where Does the Gap Come From? Breaking Down by Continent

In Asia and Africa, the six passports are fairly close: 36–42 points in Asia, 24–38 in Africa. This represents the Gulf region's shared strength — relationships with the Islamic world, South Asia, and East Africa.

The Europe column is dramatically different: 46 versus 5–9. This single column accounts for roughly 37–41 of the overall gap between UAE and the others. The remaining difference comes from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Oceania, where many countries often "follow" the Schengen visa-free decision.

UAE's Ten-Year Climb: One Agreement at a Time

UAE did not join any bloc to strengthen its passport. Instead, the country negotiated agreements one by one, with verifiable milestones as follows.

2015 — Schengen visa-free access. UAE citizens gained visa-free entry to the Schengen area for short-stay purposes. This was the biggest single boost, as one agreement opened nearly 30 countries at once. UAE was the first and, to date, remains the only Gulf state with this status.

2018 — Bilateral visa-free agreements with China and Russia. These two pacts opened major markets where most Western passports still require visas.

Many years following — Steady bilateral expansion. Canada switched UAE to the eTA (electronic travel authorization) regime. The UK added UAE to its ETA system as of 02/2024. Japan, numerous Latin American countries, African nations, and Oceania gradually signed agreements or granted visa-free access.

Where Do the Other Gulf States Stand on This Path?

Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain are progressing more slowly. A few recent milestones:

• UK: Qatar was the first to adopt the UK's ETA system (late 2023), followed by the other GCC members from 02/2024. In the table below, all six countries access the UK via ETA.
• Schengen: The EU has implemented multi-entry, longer-validity visa policies for GCC citizens from 2024. However, these remain visas, not visa-free access. According to current data, only UAE enjoys Schengen visa-free status.
• China: Qatar and Oman have visa-free access. China runs periodic unilateral visa-free windows for certain Gulf states; this type of policy activates and deactivates in waves, so verification before travel is necessary.

What's the Practical Lesson for International Readers?

Three lessons emerge.

First, a strong passport cannot be purchased in the Gulf region. UAE's Golden Visa grants long-term residence rights, not citizenship. UAE has a nomination-based citizenship process for select investors and specialists from 2021 onward, but there is no application pathway and no published fee schedule. Second, rankings are products of diplomacy and can change. UAE climbed the ranks through bilateral agreements. Conversely, a single agreement can be suspended. When selecting a second passport, you are buying that country's "diplomatic position," with both its advantages and its risks.

Third, ignore the total score and look at where you need to go. The world's 1st-ranked passport still cannot freely enter the United States. If the US is your goal, what matters is whether a passport offers ESTA or an E-2 treaty, not whether it ranks first overall.

Limitations and Common Misunderstandings

Gulf data changes rapidly. In recent years, GCC states have been signing bilateral visa-free agreements constantly. A number correct today may shift in a few months. All figures in this article are dated 09/2026.

Unilateral visa-free windows are temporary. One-sided visa-free arrangements, especially from China, have expiration dates. We do not predict future extensions not yet announced.

High ranking does not mean long-stay rights. Schengen visa-free access for UAE remains a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. No one gains the right to live or work in Europe based on passport rank.

Residence in the Gulf does not add to your passport. A Vietnamese citizen holding UAE residence status still travels on a Vietnamese passport, which scores 52 points. Some countries grant visa-free or visa-on-arrival benefits to people with UAE residency, but these are conditional privileges, not passport points.
