Dual Citizenship and Border Crossing: Which Passport to Use at Each Border?

A second passport isn't always stronger: traveling to Thailand or Japan, a Vietnamese passport often requires fewer procedures. Choosing the right document depends on each destination, and small mistakes can derail your trip.

In this article
Quick summary: A person with dual Vietnamese–Grenada citizenship (or another Caribbean nation) should enter and exit Vietnam using their Vietnamese passport, and use the second passport in destinations where it enjoys visa-free or simplified access. Golden rule: enter a country with one passport and exit with that same passport. Always carry both documents.

This question seems simple until you stand at the check-in counter at Tan Son Nhat Airport holding two passports, and the agent asks: "Which one are you traveling on?" Many people only then realize that the airline, Vietnamese border police, and the destination country's authorities may need to see different documents.

Here's what's more surprising: a second passport isn't always "stronger." According to QuocTich.com data updated 09/2026, a Grenada passport makes traveling to Europe, the UK, and China more convenient than a Vietnamese passport; but for Thailand and Japan, the Vietnamese passport has fewer procedural requirements. Which document you use depends on each specific destination, not habit.

Why consider two passports on every trip?

Every international flight has at least three control points, and each one focuses on something different:

Control pointWhat they checkWhich passport to show
Vietnamese border police (departure)Who you are and whether you're allowed to leave VietnamThe passport you used when you last entered Vietnam—usually your Vietnamese passport
Airline (check-in)Whether your destination country allows you in, so the airline won't be finedA passport that is visa-free or has a valid visa for the destination
Border authorities at destination (arrival)Whether you have the right to enter and for how longThe same passport you declared to the airline

Airlines face heavy fines if they carry passengers who don't meet entry requirements, so check-in staff verify carefully. They submit passenger data to the destination country using the passport number you provide. Therefore, the passport you give to the airline and the one you present to destination border authorities should be the same.

Entering and exiting Vietnam: which passport is safest?

For citizens who still hold Vietnamese citizenship, the safest approach is to enter and exit Vietnam using your valid Vietnamese passport. You won't need a visa, your stay duration won't be restricted, and domestic procedures (banking, real estate, notarization) continue to rely on Vietnamese documents.

If you enter Vietnam using a foreign passport, you'll be processed as a foreign national: you'll need a visa, an electronic travel authorization, or a visa waiver depending on your situation. According to our data, a Grenada passport requires an electronic travel authorization to enter Vietnam. Your stay will then be limited to the duration granted by that authorization, and you must exit Vietnam using that same passport.

The question "can I keep Vietnamese citizenship" is a separate legal matter. We cover this in detail in our articles on dual Vietnamese citizenship: understanding the law and procedures to retain Vietnamese citizenship. This article covers travel procedures only if you already legally hold dual citizenship.

Specific scenarios: traveling to Europe, the UK, USA, and Asia

From Vietnam to the Schengen area with a Grenada passport

This is the most common scenario. Here's the sequence we recommend:

  1. Book your flight under the name as it appears on your Grenada passport.
  2. At the airline counter: present your Grenada passport (to prove visa-free access to Schengen), and bring your Vietnamese passport if the agent asks.
  3. At Vietnamese departure control: present your Vietnamese passport, since that's what you used when you last entered Vietnam.
  4. Upon arrival in Schengen: present your Grenada passport. The EU's electronic entry-exit system records biometric data linked to this passport.
  5. Leaving Schengen: present your Grenada passport again.

Steps four and five are important because your 90-day stay within 180 days is calculated per passport. The calculation rules are explained in our article on Schengen's 90/180 day rule.

To the UK

With a Grenada passport, our data indicates you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before travel, not a full visa like with a Vietnamese passport. Apply for the ETA using your Grenada passport number and use that passport at both the airline and UK border.

To the USA and Canada

Both Vietnamese and Grenada passports require a visa to enter the USA and Canada. If you already have a valid US visa stamped in your Vietnamese passport, you can travel with that document. If you need a new visa, consider which passport to apply with—many families following the Grenada to E-2 Visa route must use their Grenada passport since Vietnam has no E-2 treaty with the USA.

Within Asia: don't assume the second passport is always better

According to QuocTich.com data updated 09/2026: traveling to China, a Grenada passport enjoys short-term visa-free access, while a Vietnamese passport requires a visa. But to Thailand, a Vietnamese passport is visa-free while a Grenada passport requires an electronic travel authorization. To Japan, a Vietnamese passport offers an electronic travel authorization option, while a Grenada passport requires a stamped visa. Check each country pair using our visa checker tool, or see what both passports combined unlock with our passport combination tool.

Small details that can ruin your trip

  • Different names on your two passports. Foreign passports may list names in a different order, without diacritical marks, or split middle names differently. Your flight booking must match exactly the passport you declare to the airline.
  • Your Vietnamese passport expires while you're abroad. Many people let their Vietnamese passport expire because "I have the new one now," then can't return to Vietnam using that document. Renew it at a Vietnamese diplomatic mission at least six months before expiration.
  • Leaving the transit area during a layover. If you need to leave the airport during a connection, use the passport that is visa-free or has appropriate authorization for that transit country.
  • Visa still valid in your old passport. A visa stamped in your old Vietnamese passport may remain valid even after you receive a new one, but you must carry both documents and verify the issuing country's rules.
  • Children. A child with dual citizenship also needs two valid passports, and if traveling with only one parent, carry a notarized consent letter from the other parent for countries that require it.
  • Information on visa application forms. Many forms ask "do you hold any other citizenship?" Answer truthfully; incomplete disclosure can be treated as providing false information.

Known risks

The biggest risk isn't at border control but from long-term document confusion: entering country A with one passport and exiting with another causes that country's system to record you as never having departed. On your next visa application to that country, you might be questioned about an overstay. Newer electronic entry-exit systems in the EU and other countries make this error much more visible.

A second risk: visa-free policies change. A country currently visa-free for Caribbean passport holders may pause the program or add an electronic authorization requirement. Always verify before each trip; don't rely on memory.

A third risk: some countries require citizens holding that country's nationality to use that passport for entry. If you later acquire European or US citizenship, the rules will change.

Checklist before every trip

  • [ ] Both passports valid for at least six months
  • [ ] Flight booking matches the name on the passport you'll use at your destination
  • [ ] You've checked visa requirements for your destination and transit countries for each passport
  • [ ] You've applied for any required electronic travel authorizations (ETA, e-visa) using the correct passport number
  • [ ] You've noted which passport you used to enter each country so you exit with the same one
  • [ ] You have children's documents and parental consent letters if needed

Next steps

If you've just received your second passport, spend an afternoon creating a chart of countries your family visits frequently, noting which passport to use for each. This chart remains useful for years and prevents confusion at airport counters. Other tasks to complete in your first month are covered in our article 30 days after receiving your passport. Information about Grenada passports is updated regularly on our country pages.

Questions & answers

Which passport should dual nationals use to enter Vietnam?

If still holding Vietnamese citizenship, the safest approach is to enter and exit Vietnam using a valid Vietnamese passport. Entering with a foreign passport means being processed as a foreigner, requiring a visa and subject to stay duration limits.

Can I exit Vietnam with a Vietnamese passport and enter Europe with a Grenada passport?

Yes, it's a common approach. Present your Vietnamese passport to Vietnamese border police, present your Grenada passport to the airline and Schengen border control, then exit Schengen with your Grenada passport.

Which passport name should I book the flight ticket under when holding dual citizenship?

Use the name on the passport you'll use to enter your destination country, since the airline sends passenger data to that country based on that document. Note that names on the two passports may differ in order or diacritics.

Does a Grenada passport have visa-free access to Thailand and Japan?

According to QuocTich.com data updated 09/2026, a Grenada passport requires an e-visa for Thailand and a visa for Japan. A Vietnamese passport has visa-free access to Thailand and an e-visa option for Japan, so for these two countries the Vietnamese passport is more convenient.

Is there a problem entering one country with one passport and leaving with another?

There is a risk. That country's system may record you as not having exited, leading to questions about overstay on future visa applications. Always exit a country with the same passport you used to enter.

Do I need to disclose a second citizenship when applying for a visa?

If the application form asks, you should disclose it truthfully. Failing to disclose a citizenship could be considered false information, affecting your current application and future ones.
