◆ PERMANENT RESIDENCY · REFERENCE
Australia National Innovation Visa
Australia HAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED its investment pathway: the Business Innovation and Investment subclass 188 program closed indefinitely on 31/07/2024, after the Department of Home Affairs concluded it delivered poor economic outcomes. Its replacement is the National Innovation Visa subclass 858 — offering permanent residency immediately, but INVITATION-ONLY with NO minimum investment requirement. In exchange, applicants must demonstrate internationally recognized achievements, plus require sponsorship from nationally or internationally reputable endorsers, in priority sectors such as critical technology, healthcare, and renewable energy. To be clear: this is no longer a program you can purchase. Anyone still marketing "Australia 188" is selling something that has been closed for two years.

Frequently asked questions
Not for new applications. The Business Innovation and Investment Program, which includes Visa 188 and 888 categories including the Significant Investor Visa, closed to new applications from mid-2024. Previously submitted applications continue to be processed. Anyone still being offered this program should request written confirmation of the program's current status from their advisor before making any financial commitments.
The Australian government determined that the program did not deliver economic value proportionate to skills-based migration pathways, and has shifted focus to attracting talent through the National Innovation Visa.
It is the replacement pathway, targeting individuals with exceptional achievements in academia, research, sports, arts, or business. It grants permanent residency directly, without a temporary residency phase. You must demonstrate internationally recognized outstanding achievements and secure sponsorship from a reputable organization or individual already in Australia. This is not an investment pathway—money cannot substitute for genuine credentials.
It is restricted. Non-permanent residents typically can only purchase newly built properties or vacant land for development, and must obtain approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) and pay significant additional tax penalties. Many people do not realize this before planning their move.
Yes. From Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to Sydney and Melbourne, approximately 8–9 hours' flight time. The time difference with Vietnam is only 3–4 hours, making it nearly possible to work the same business day with partners back home—a major advantage if you continue to manage operations in Vietnam.
Significantly milder. Australia has no harsh winters, no snow in major cities, and no months of short, early-darkening days. However, bushfires during summer are a serious concern and are increasing with climate change. When buying property, you should carefully inquire about the fire risk rating for your intended area.
After obtaining permanent residency, you must actually reside in Australia for 4 years, with 12 months of that as a permanent resident, plus passing a citizenship knowledge test. Australia permits dual citizenship.
Three main options: the skilled migration pathway based on points if you or your children are under 45 with relevant qualifications and strong English—typically faster and cheaper than other pathways; state sponsorship programs for business owners, with conditions varying by state; and international education followed by transition to permanent residency, a path many Vietnamese families are currently taking.
