Frequently asked questions
Yes, since 2007. It did not before, and the amendment was made precisely to reconnect with the diaspora — an Armenian-descended French, American or Russian citizen need not surrender their existing nationality. For Vietnamese readers this distinguishes Armenia from the entire Central Asian bloc: it does not require giving up Vietnamese nationality.
Yes. They may naturalise without meeting the ordinary residence requirement, and this is the most common path by which a foreigner becomes an Armenian citizen. It is a descent-based right of return, the same class as Kazakhstan's kandas route.
They must take ordinary naturalisation: years of lawful residence, the Armenian language, knowledge of the constitution. There is no shortcut by payment. Permitting dual citizenship removes one barrier, not the others.
No, there is no Caribbean-style programme converting a contribution directly into a passport. Armenia does offer relatively accessible residence procedures, including residence tied to establishing a business, but residence is not citizenship. Some intermediaries merge the two and call the result 'the Armenia programme' — ask by the legal name of what you receive.
Communities formed over centuries of trade and were greatly enlarged after the events affecting Armenians in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923, which killed from hundreds of thousands to more than a million people and effectively ended the Armenian presence in Anatolia. Most of the diaspora in France, the US, Lebanon, Syria and Argentina descends from survivors. That is the direct reason Armenian nationality law has its present shape.
In September 2023 Azerbaijan conducted a military operation and assumed control of the entire region, which lies within Azerbaijan's internationally recognised borders and had a majority Armenian population through much of the twentieth century. Almost the whole Armenian population there, around 100,000 people, left for Armenia within weeks. For a country of 2.8 million this is enormous pressure on housing, employment and the budget.
The borders with Türkiye and Azerbaijan have been closed for many years, so nearly all Armenian goods reaching the world must pass through Georgia or Iran. This is a structural rather than temporary constraint, shaping logistics costs, foreign policy and economic structure. It is also why the IT sector could grow — it is the one sector unaffected by closed borders.
They should investigate military service obligations carefully before applying. It is a frequently overlooked question with real consequences, particularly for those with sons. Ask the competent authority directly rather than relying on an article.
