No. All land belongs to the Crown and cannot be sold, not even to Tongans. Land is allocated to nobles who administer estates, and every adult male citizen has a constitutional entitlement to an allotment. Foreigners may only lease, and leases require approval.

King George Tupou I unified the islands and promulgated a constitution in 1875; Tonga was a British protected state from 1900 but retained its monarchy and internal self-government rather than becoming a colony. It is the only surviving Polynesian monarchy.
In January 2022 the submarine volcano Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai erupted, among the most powerful ever recorded with modern instruments. Tsunami struck the islands, ash blanketed Tongatapu, and the single submarine cable connecting Tonga to the world was severed, leaving the country effectively without internet for weeks. The general lesson: an island state typically has only one cable.
