Frequently asked questions
Visa requirements depend on your citizenship. Citizens of most developed nations (US, EU, Australia, Canada) can enter visa-free for 90 days. Check the El Salvador immigration website or consulate in your country for your specific citizenship. Some countries require a visa obtained in advance from an El Salvador embassy or consulate.
Bitcoin is legal tender since September 2021, and businesses are theoretically required to accept it. In practice, adoption remains limited—the vast majority of transactions still use US dollars, especially in rural areas and among older populations. Tourist areas, tech-focused businesses, and younger entrepreneurs accept Bitcoin more readily, but do not expect to use Bitcoin everywhere.
Security has improved significantly since 2022 due to strict gang suppression measures. However, caution is warranted: avoid dangerous neighborhoods (certain areas of San Salvador), do not display valuables, use Uber or taxis for evening travel rather than walking. Affluent suburbs, beachfront resorts, and quiet small towns are considerably safer.
Prices vary widely. Small apartments in San Salvador range from 60,000-120,000 USD; mid-range homes from 100,000-250,000 USD; beachfront villas or luxury gated communities from 300,000-1 million USD. Foreigners can purchase property freely without restrictions. Hire a local attorney to thoroughly verify legal documentation before purchasing.
Technically, tourist visas prohibit employment, but working remotely for foreign companies (not serving El Salvador-based clients) is generally tolerated informally. Many digital nomads operate on tourist or short-term extension visas. However, for long-term legality, obtain a temporary residency permit or work visa if you have a contract with a local employer.
English is uncommon outside tourist areas and international offices. For long-term residence, daily communication, and administrative procedures, basic Spanish proficiency is necessary. Spanish is relatively easier to learn than Asian languages, and affordable classes are available locally (150-300 USD/month for full-time courses).
El Salvador's central location makes it convenient. You can cross land borders into Guatemala and Honduras. One to two-hour flights connect to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua. Regional airfares are affordable via carriers like Avianca and Copa Airlines. This is a major advantage for exploring the region or conducting multi-country business.
This program is very new, experimental, and lacks a stable enforcement history. Policy risk is considerably higher than traditional residency programs. Our firm does not accept applications for this pathway. If you remain interested, seek independent consultation with an immigration attorney specializing in El Salvador and carefully assess your personal risk tolerance.
