Frequently asked questions
Yes, in defined circumstances and on prior application. Bangladeshi citizens who acquire the nationality of certain specified countries may retain Bangladeshi citizenship through an application procedure, and those approved receive a Dual Nationality Certificate. The qualifying list and conditions are set by government and have been amended over time — it is not an automatic right.
You must ask directly. Whether Vietnam falls within the qualifying list, and the conditions at the time you file, must be verified with the Bangladeshi Ministry of Home Affairs or a Bangladeshi mission, not inferred from an article.
NRB is an investment, remittance and financial-incentive classification for Bangladeshis abroad, comparable to India's NRI. It is not a residence status substituting for citizenship like India's OCI or Nepal's NRN. Three similar acronyms, three different things.
Myanmar's 1982 citizenship law is built on a list of recognised national groups, and the Rohingya are not on it, so most of the population holds no country's nationality. This shows nationality law can create statelessness through its structure: a statute need not declare anyone's citizenship revoked, only define recognition by a list.
Since 2017 around a million Rohingya from Myanmar's Rakhine State have come to Bangladesh and live in camps there — the largest refugee settlement in the world by population. Repatriation discussions have not succeeded because the underlying issue, citizenship status in the country of origin, remains unresolved.
The 2013 disaster killing more than 1,100 people led to legally binding factory safety inspection mechanisms between international brands and factories, inspecting thousands of plants and requiring remediation. International labour bodies record substantial improvement in fire and structural safety, though debate continues over wages, union rights and working conditions.
It comes directly from the 1952 Language Movement in East Pakistan, when people campaigned for Bengali to be recognised as a state language and several demonstrators were killed on 21 February 1952. UNESCO later designated that date — one of very few international days originating in a specific country's history.
The model of small uncollateralised loans associated with the Grameen Bank and the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize originated here and spread to dozens of countries. But its actual poverty-reduction impact has been reassessed by many researchers with mixed results, several finding effects more modest than initially expected.
