After offshore oil was discovered in the mid-1990s GDP grew very rapidly, and measured per head it has for years been among Africa's highest. But human development indicators such as life expectancy, child mortality, clean water access and education are far lower than that figure suggests. A total divided by a population, not distribution. A country of two million with large oil revenue shows very high GDP per head even if most people never touch it. When considering moving somewhere, look up service indicators such as health, education, power and water rather than GDP.
In countries of this type, goods and services aimed at the moneyed group are often very expensive while public services are weak. A foreigner arriving must buy almost everything privately at high prices — private healthcare, international schooling, backup power.
For every figure an advisory firm hands you, ask what it measures and what it does not. A passport ranking does not measure the durability of the recognition network, a visa-free count does not measure how easily you can open a bank account, and GDP does not measure hospitals.
Equatorial Guinea belongs to the institutions of the Spanish-speaking community and has particular relationships with Spain and Latin America. More than twenty countries use Spanish officially, so for anyone who already has it the working space is far wider than they may think, and Equatorial Guinea is that space's rare African link.
It comprises the mainland region of Río Muni bordering Cameroon and Gabon plus several islands. Bioko Island, containing the capital Malabo, lies off Cameroon rather than beside its own mainland. Annobón Island lies far to the south, below the equator.
Naturalisation is not a realistic route. Procedures are assessed as complex and foreigners typically work under oil company contracts. Living costs are very high and public services weak.
