Frequently asked questions
The Central America-4 arrangement among Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, allowing citizens of the four countries to cross internal borders without separate entry formalities each time. Guatemalan citizenship therefore opens a living and working area larger than one country — structurally similar to Jamaica's CARICOM position.
Those with stable, guaranteed passive income from abroad — rentals, dividends or income from assets. The best fit for remote workers or those living on assets. A pensionado visa also exists for those with a foreign pension.
Around five years of residence, substantially reduced for citizens of Central American countries and Spain under historical provisions, plus Spanish ability, knowledge of history and institutions, and a clean record. Guatemala permits dual citizenship.
Many competing schools with one-to-one tuition as the common standard — essentially unobtainable in Europe at comparable cost. Many include homestay with a local family. The Guatemalan accent is regarded as clear and easy to follow, considerably easier than Chilean Spanish. The town is small, walkable and safer than the capital.
It depends on altitude rather than latitude. The highlands — home to the capital, Antigua and Lake Atitlán — have pleasant temperatures year-round, roughly 20-25°C by day and cool at night, requiring neither air conditioning nor heating. Guatemala calls itself the land of eternal spring. The coastal lowlands are hot and humid.
Real and serious. Guatemala sits at the junction of three tectonic plates with numerous active volcanoes, among them Fuego, one of the most active in the Americas, whose 2018 eruption caused heavy loss of life. Earthquakes are also frequent. Research your specific position relative to active volcanoes and check whether property insurance covers geological risk.
Crime is a genuine issue, particularly in parts of the capital and on some routes. But levels vary greatly by area — Antigua and the Lake Atitlán region, where foreigners concentrate, are considerably safer. Choosing where to live and adjusting habits is necessary.
High-quality coffee, sugar, bananas, and notably Guatemala is the world's largest cardamom exporter — a detail few know.
