Frequently asked questions
For not cutting its forest. Almost 90% of Gabon is forest and its deforestation rate is among the lowest of any tropical forest country; it absorbs more carbon than it emits, making it net carbon negative. Gabon was among the first countries to receive international results-based payments for reducing deforestation and maintaining forest carbon stocks.
All three sell an intangible that a small state's particular position creates. Djibouti sells the right to stand somewhere, the Caribbean states sell the right to hold a nationality, Gabon sells not doing something. All three carry the same three limits: rent rather than production income, fast-arriving competition, and budget money that does not automatically spread to the population.
Its value depends entirely on buyers still trusting the measurement. Forest carbon markets have been through repeated controversies over whether credits genuinely represent carbon kept out of the atmosphere. When you sell an intangible, the certification system's reputation is the product.
A carbon credit from a loose system and a passport from a loose programme lose value by identical mechanics. That is why programmes with rigorous due diligence hold their value.
Oil remains the largest export and budget revenue source but output passed its peak long ago and is declining, placing Gabon in the same past-peak group as the Republic of the Congo — the hardest of the three oil phases.
Gabon has actively built alternatives: manganese, controlled timber processing and climate finance. It also banned the export of unprocessed logs, forcing processing to happen domestically. It is a rare example of an oil country diversifying while the money is still there rather than once it is gone.
Gabon has set aside around 11% of its territory as national parks. Loango National Park is famous as one of the few places to see forest elephants, buffalo and gorillas on the beach. Gabon has also established an extensive marine protected area network.
Oil dependence amid declining output, a very small domestic market, high living and operating costs relative to the region, youth unemployment, and still-high public debt. Gabon also went through a change of government in 2023 with a transitional period.
