No. Those naturalising must renounce their prior nationality, and Ethiopians acquiring another nationality lose Ethiopian citizenship. Instead Ethiopia issues an identity card for people of Ethiopian origin who hold foreign nationality.
It grants visa-free entry, residence and work rights, ownership of certain property categories and access to some services. It does not grant the right to vote, to stand for office or hold public positions, and it is not an Ethiopian passport. The turning point was the Battle of Adwa in 1896, when Ethiopian forces defeated an invading Italian army — among the very few occasions an African country defeated a European power in a large-scale battle of that era, strongly influencing anti-colonial movements. Italy occupied Ethiopia between 1936 and 1941, but that was a military occupation rather than an established long-term colonial regime.
It has 13 months and runs roughly seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. Ethiopia also keeps its own time, with the day beginning at sunrise so hour 1 is around 7am by international reckoning — something visitors and businesspeople frequently confuse when setting appointments. Ethiopia also retains the Ge'ez script, among the few indigenous African writing systems still in widespread use.
When Eritrea became independent in 1993, Ethiopia lost all sea access and became the most populous landlocked country in the world. A very large share of its trade passes through ports in Djibouti with substantial transit fees, and agreements seeking to diversify access have caused regional diplomatic tension.
Ethiopia has built a large dam on the Blue Nile, which supplies most of the Nile's flow. Egypt and Sudan downstream have raised serious concerns about water volumes, and trilateral negotiations have run for years without a comprehensive agreement. It is the largest by number of people affected among the upstream-downstream disputes this library tracks.
It is Africa's largest airline and Addis Ababa is the continent's largest aviation transit hub. This is among the few examples of an African state-owned enterprise competing successfully at global scale, achieved through geographic position plus consistent long-term investment.
Foreign currency shortages and difficulty repatriating capital are real problems, the same class as Laos, Iran and Myanmar. This must be resolved first, because if it is unsolved everything else is secondary. Ethiopia has also had to restructure public debt.
